The earliest known signature from a well-known historical figure belongs to the nobleman and military leader "El Cid" of medieval Spain.

This concept of signature is important,
because it lays the foundations for what we call a documented expression of trust.
A document with a signature is to be trusted to express the will or the consent of the person that has signed this document.

Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman, in 1976
first described the idea of a digital signature scheme, but they only theorized the existence of such schemes.

In 1977, Ronald Rivest, Adi Shamir and Len Adleman invented the RSA algorithm, which could be used to produce a sort of primitive digital signature.
